Location: in Ansouis, 5 kms east of Lourmarin, 30 kms northwest of Aix-en-Provence

This centuries-old house with exposed stone façade and pale green shutters is located in the hilltop village of Ansouis, classed as one of the most beautiful villages of France. The home is an official historic monument, once the local meeting place and headquarters of those in favor of the new république following the French revolution. Steps away are the boulangerie, a café, restaurants and the post office. And there is an open-air market on Thursdays.
In warmer months, join the locals and go for a refreshing swim in the nearby fresh water lake, Etang de la Bonde. It’s clear spring water and just five minutes driving from the house. Or explore Lourmarin, Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Isle sur la Sorgue, the Mediterranean coast or local wineries. They’re all within easy driving distance.
The three-story property has a small walled interior courtyard with breakfast table on the ground floor, an intimate spot to enjoy your morning croissant and coffee with a glimpse of the blue Provençal sky. Upstairs is a larger roof-top terrace with outdoor dining furniture and wonderful views over the village and countryside. Adjacent to the upper terrace inside is a kitchenette with sink, small refrigerator and stove.
The old house has been totally renovated and boasts tremendous country style and character. It features original painted tile floors, painted beamed ceilings and a combination of contemporary and antique furnishings. Along with that country charm is the best of modern comforts, including air-conditioning units on all levels.
The street entrance opens to a spacious living-dining room with pale yellow walls and monumental stone fireplace. In front of the fireplace are two overstuffed sofas grouped around a glass coffee table set on an Asian-style carpet. Behind is a large rectangular stone-topped wrought iron dining table and upholstered chairs for 10 people. This inviting room is accented with occasional tables and an antique wood buffet.
A door from this room opens to the small interior courtyard with tile-topped café table. Off the living room is a wonderfully designed and equipped kitchen with wood butcher block counters, maple cabinets and a large butcher block center island. A door from the kitchen opens to the street. Also on this level is a small office area.
There are a total of 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, all on the second and third floors. It’s a pleasure to go up the colorful staircase with yellow and white walls, terra cotta stairs and painted trim. All the bedrooms are decorated with pastel walls, pretty bedcovers and curtains, and the bathrooms are all nicely tiled.
On the second level are 3 bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. One is a large suite with king bed (convertible to twins), sitting area and bathroom. The other two have queen beds. On the third floor are 2 additional bedrooms, both smaller. One has a queen bed and another has a queen folding bed, most appropriate for a teenager or overnight guests. These two bedrooms share a small bathroom with shower accessed on the staircase. Extra toilet facilities are located on the ground floor.
A house exuding great charm and a wonderful base for experiencing authentic French village life.

A great place to stay - lots of room. We loved the 'morning terrace' with kitchen upstairs. The village was wonderful.
