The French word chartreuse designates a monastery of the Carthusian monks. The most famed chartreuse is in the mountains near Grenoble where monks distilled a greenish-yellow liqueur of the same name. Nestled in over 200-acre grounds, this historically important and beautifully restored Chartreuse, dating from the 16th century, still boasts the vestiges of an ancient forge used by the local monks.
The grounds feature a beautiful lake, carefully maintained to encourage a wealth of plant, insect and bird life. From the lake an active stream flows through the grounds. In addition to the formal gardens around the Chartreuse is a large covered eating area with summer kitchen, barbecue and outdoor dining room as well as a comfortable lounging area with sunken open fire pit. The large private pool, which may be heated on request, is set to one side of the grounds and has a large sunbathing terrace and covered pool house with lounging cushions.
The property consists of two buildings, the old Chartreuse accommodating 12 people and the Guest House for 8 people. They have been restored with no expense spared, using the highest quality materials. Traditional architectural features include warm honey-colored exposed stone walls, stone floors, beautiful wood-beamed ceilings, and old marble and stone fireplaces. The décor includes fine classic and antique furnishings, lush fabrics, brilliant chandeliers and lamps combined with a full complement of modern appliances and amenities. The result is a property of tremendous character and elegance that you must experience yourself to fully appreciate.
With 7,000 square feet of living space, the Chartreuse provides ample room for everyone at the two accommodations to socialize, cook and share meals together. On arrival at the property, it flanks the entire left-hand-side of the grounds. On the garden level a door from the entry hall leads to the spacious kitchen, well equipped for the best of cooks. It includes a professional-level stove, a full complement of painted wood cabinets and expansive wood counters. At one end are a round wood breakfast table and chairs in front of the old stone fireplace.
Further on is a casual dining room with its stone fireplace and a rectangular farm table and chairs. Beyond is a den with comfortable sofas, a bar and television. From the main entry hall, a majestic double stone staircase leads up to the second floor (1st floor French) entrance. At this level are an impressive hallway, a spacious graciously furnished living room as well as a formal dining room with immense round table and traditional wood paneling.
The Chartreuse accommodates up to 20 people in 10 bedrooms with 8 bathrooms. The bedrooms are all beautifully decorated with plush bedcovers, pretty curtains and drapes, and antique-style pieces. The bathrooms feature fine ceramic fixtures and tilework. Five of the bedrooms are upstairs including a king suite with private outdoor terrace and full ensuite bathroom, and another suite with queen bed and full bathroom.
Also on this level are two more queen bedrooms and one with twins. Serving these three bedrooms up a half-level is a spacious bathroom with back-to-back double sinks separated by a mirrored wall, a bathtub, a shower and toilet facilities. There are also additional toilet facilities on the hall near the bedrooms. The sixth bedroom is on the ground level at the far end beyond the den. This room includes twin beds and French doors opening to the grounds. Adjacent on the hall is a full bathroom with toilet facilities.
Some 100 yards opposite the Chartreuse across the lawn and main outdoor dining area is the Guest House accommodating 8 people. It has been renovated and furnished to the same high standards of charm and comfort. And the Guest House is equipped with Wi Fi internet access. On the ground level is a spacious open-plan living-dining room with kitchen including a sitting area with comfortable sofas and chairs grouped near a wood coffee table in front of the stone fireplace.
The Guest House features 4 bedrooms each with ensuite bathroom. One of the bedrooms has twin beds and is located off the main living area. Stairs from the sitting room lead to a large landing and access to three more bedroom suites, two with queen beds and one more with twin beds.
