Location: 1.5 kms from Vence, 20 kms northwest of Nice
The old town of Vence sports 15th-century ramparts and is set in the hills just a few miles from the sea. The countryside is dotted with orange and olive groves as well as beautiful flowers. With its cobblestone streets, plane-tree shaded main square, shops, restaurants, cafés and weekly open-air market, Vence is an excellent home base for enjoying town life and all the sights of the Côte d’Azur.
Set on a hill above Vence, Villa Vence dates from the 1930s and sports a pale stucco facade, green shutters and red tile roof. The enclosed grounds have been beautifully landscaped and include large cypress, palm and olive trees, oleander, lavender, yucca and a variety of flowering shrubs and plants. The pretty swimming pool sits below the house and is surrounded by a stone terrace.
Inside, the house has been well renovated and stylishly decorated. The rooms are light and bright with large south-facing windows, pastel walls, and a combination of antique and contemporary furnishings.
Stairs from the garden lead to the entry hall and to the right the open-plan living-dining room. This appealing room has gracefully arched French doors opening to a terrace overlooking the pool and garden, the perfect place for outdoor meals. Black and white tile floors complement pale ocher walls. At one end of the room is a sitting area with black leather sofa and upholstered chairs grouped around a contemporary coffee table in front of the fireplace. Behind is the dining area with a rectangular wood table and chairs for 6 people. Antique tables, chests and works of original art are striking accents.
Also off the entry is the kitchen. It is well-equipped with all appliances and sports sunny yellow ceramic tilework, yellow counters and white and yellow- trimmed wood cabinets.
There are a total of 3 amply-sized bedrooms, each with its own bath. One with king bed is on the main floor off the living room and has a large ensuite bathroom with gray ceramic tile work. A graceful staircase with wrought iron railing leads to two more bedrooms, each with bathroom adjacent on the hall. All the bedrooms are decorated with colorful bedcovers and curtains and include large antique armoires, bedside tables and lamps. The upstairs bathrooms are particularly spacious and feature exceptional mosaic tile work, one in shades of turquoise, the other in shades of green. There is an additional bathroom on the pool level with shower and toilet facilities.
An appealing villa and home base from which to explore the Côte d’Azur.
