Location: in the village of Cabrières d’Avignon, 30 kms east of Avignon
Set in the Luberon village of Cabrières d’Avignon, this stately manor house is located next to the 16th-century church and was the former residence of the bishop. Cabrières’ narrow streets are lined with honey-colored stone houses, and the village features old stone fountains and a 12th-century castle. Just steps away are one of the best bakeries in the area, a small butcher, grocer and two restaurants. Within easy driving distance are scenic perched villages such as Gordes, Ménerbes and Bonnieux and larger towns such as Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Cavaillon and Apt. It’s among the most central locations for exploring all the sights of Provence.
With origins in the 18th-century, the old stone manor house has a yellow façade, gray shutters and is adorned with stone sculptures. Enclosed by stone walls, the sunny south-facing property has a lovely garden with natural lawn, trees, rosemary, lavender and other flowering shrubs and plants. Unique stone features include an old well and fanciful statues. The pretty pool with stone terrace is located at the side of the house. Adjacent is a covered terrace with teak dining table and chairs. You can also enjoy al fresco meals in the front garden at the old stone dining table with rattan chairs.
Inside, the house has been lovingly renovated over the years retaining wood beamed ceilings, marble and stone floors and fireplaces. Thick stone walls provide excellent insulation, keeping the house cool in the warmer months. An array of antique wood pieces, period art and carpets complement modern furnishings and all conveniences including high-speed internet access.
To the right of the entry hall is the open-plan living-dining room with wood beamed ceiling. Colorful drapes frame the French doors opening to the front garden. In the sitting area are two red upholstered sofas and an easy chair grouped by small marble-topped coffee tables.
A graceful archway leads to the dining area with round wood table and chairs by the old fireplace. An impressive collection of antique chests, bookcases, tables, sculpture and art accent this appealing room with yellow walls. A door from the dining area opens to the kitchen with small wood breakfast table, professional level stove, stone tile counters, painted wood cabinets and all appliances. French doors open to the arbored dining terrace by the pool.
There are a total of 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, all up a stone staircase with wrought iron railing. The bedrooms have stone or terra cotta tile floors, colorful walls and tall windows. They are decorated with pretty bedcovers, floor-to-ceiling drapes, and a selection of antique armoires, chests, lamps and period art. Three overlook the front garden; the other three overlook the grounds in the back. The bathrooms sport ceramic or travertine tilework and include two showers and three tubs with shower attachments. Four are ensuite with bedrooms. The fifth is accessed on the hall and includes a large clawfoot tub with shower attachment, sink and toilet facilities. Two of the bedrooms, a queen and another with twins, are interconnecting and share a bathroom. These are most appropriate for families or very good friends.
A historic property with great character and charm in a typical Provençal village.
