The Var region in eastern Provence provides a picturesque setting for le Moulin aux Olives, a 17th-century olive oil mill, beautifully renovated and expanded. The Var is well located between the heart of Provence and the Côte d’Azur, a perfect homebase for day trips to Aix-en-Provence as well as St-Tropez, Nice and Cannes. And the Var itself, a less touristed area, is full of scenic countryside, charming villages, towns and interesting sights to explore.
Just a short walk from the village of Callas, the property is set in two-and-a-half-acre grounds featuring tall trees, old olive trees, herb and rose gardens, a variety of flowering plants and shrubs, meadowland, terraces with teak furniture and a large swimming pool surrounded by a stone terrace. Completing the outdoor setting is a Turkish-style “sofra” with central stone chimney and lounging area with colorful cotton cushions. Ideal for shaded daytime relaxation, it’s also a cozy place to sit by the fire on cool evenings.
Inside, the old olive mill has been marvelously restored, and two wings have been added to create a property with tremendous Provençal atmosphere, total comfort and great charm. The highest quality natural building materials and a stylish combination of antique and contemporary furnishings ensure a seamless blend between the old and new parts of the house.
Entry to the house is through French doors from the terrace and garden into a spacious open-plan living and dining room, formerly the main part of the old mill. It features twenty-foot-high wood-beamed ceilings and terra cotta tile floors. On one end is the living room with large cream sofas grouped in front of an old stone fireplace. At the far end of the room is the dining area with solid oak table and chairs. This appealing room is accented by a variety of antique pieces including chests, occasional tables and lamps.
An arched doorway from the dining area leads to the fully-equipped kitchen with hand-crafted wood cabinets, a professional-level stove with two ovens, all appliances and conveniences. From here, French doors open to a shaded patio, the perfect spot for outdoor dining
Five bedrooms and 5 bathrooms have been designed and furnished with comfort and convenience in mind. The bedrooms all feature lovely linens, bedcovers and antique chests, armoires and tables. The bathrooms include pretty stone or ceramic tilework and quality fixtures. In the old part of the house is the master bedroom suite with queen bed and spacious bathroom with walk-in shower. Off the living-dining room are two more bedrooms; one on the ground level with a large bathroom nearby on the mezzanine, and another upstairs with adjacent bathroom with shower.
There are two more bedrooms in a wing overlooking the pool, each with ensuite bathroom and with doors opening to a patio with wrought iron railing. One has a queen bed and a mezzanine above it with sloped ceiling and futon beds most appropriate for children. The other has twin beds.
Below these bedrooms on the ground level are a second kitchen and a shower adjacent to the pool. The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator, sink and food preparation and storage areas, everything you’ll need for easy poolside meals.
