The largest city on the island, Ajaccio known as the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte, offers many historic sites including the not to be missed 12th century citadel built by the Genoese, the town’s historic cathedral, and the Bonaparte Residence museum. Enjoy Corsican culture at the open air market, and cafés on Place Foch, or enjoy the sun on one of Ajaccio’s beaches. Go off the beaten path and try out the excellent diving paths in the Scandola Nature Reserve (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) North of Ajaccio, or to the South in the waters around Propriano.
