Location: in Vaison-la-Romaine, 50 kms northeast of Avignon
If you dream of living in a historic and bustling Provençal town, look no further. This old stone house is located in the perched medieval village of Vaison-la-Romaine. You'll wander through narrow cobblestone streets with fountains, shaded squares, little boutiques, several good restaurants and cafés. There are also the ruins of the impressive 12th-century castle.
A footpath from the medieval village leads down to the old Roman bridge and the center of Vaison. Here you'll find its plane-tree shaded main square, celebrated Gallo-Roman ruins, full complement of shops and weekly open-air market. Within easy drives are renowned towns and wine villages, from Orange and Seguret to Gigondas and Vacqueyras. And majestic Mont Ventoux and the Dentelles de Montmirail are always in view.
Set at the end of a row of medieval houses, this corner property boasts wonderful views over the rooftops of Vaison as well as the mountains and valleys below. Its stone façade, including original stone sculpted door and window features, attests to its ancient history. And from its small corner patio with café table and chairs, you have your own personal village view.
You'll also enjoy panoramic rooftop and country views from the private garden area. Accessed at the end of the street up a flight of stone stairs, the garden boasts an array of trees and flowering plants and shrubs including rosemary, lavender and roses. Its lovely arbored dining area has a wood table, chairs and barbecue.
Inside, the three-story house has been completely renovated. Heavy wood-beamed ceilings and terra cotta tile floors are the backdrop for a combination of modern and antique furnishings, all appliances and comforts. Entry is into the open-plan dining room and kitchen. In the dining area are a pretty rectangular wood dining table and chairs set on an Asian-style carpet. Beyond is the fully-equipped kitchen with white wood cabinets and all appliances. A center island with stools is an informal eating spot as well as providing extra preparation space. Beside the kitchen area is a wood stove, keeping the room warm and cozy in cooler months. Also on this level are separate toilet facilities.
Stairs from the kitchen lead to two bedrooms and a bathroom. Both bedrooms have double beds and are beautifully decorated with quilted bedcovers, curtains, wood side tables, lamps, chests and ample wardrobe space. They also enjoy terrific rooftop and country views. Between the bedrooms is a tiled bathroom with shower, sink and toilet.
Stairs from the bedroom level go up to the third floor and a spacious living room. On this top level, there are large picture windows taking even better advantage of the exceptional country views. The living room is open and airy and has several sitting areas. An upholstered loveseat, period settee and wingback chair are grouped around a pretty carpet. In a corner by the settee is the television. In another corner is a reading nook with daybed and comfortable cushions. Heavy wood beamed ceilings, antique chests, occasional tables and bookcases are warm accents to this appealing and comfortable room.
A house with great character and charm in the heart of a lively and historic Provençal town.
